All five of them! But it must be the change from warm to cool weather, or Venus rising in Jupiter, or some such thing because this week-end has been like running a day care for 2-year olds! One wakes up and starts moving around...ok, time to let them out. But, not until the one moving sets off one barking, that sets off 4 of the 5 barking so loud I try flying down the stairs to get the door open.

OK...everyone outside. Quiet for at least 5 minutes. The tea kettle boiled the water before I got up...quick grab the cup and make tea, pour the OJ and breathe...wait! They've remembered that after going outside comes breakfast and they all want it...NOW! This morning I tried talking them into brunch, but they weren't having it...sigh. Get their bowls out and try to get my brain to think...which one gets which food and how much, make sure the right dog gets her medication. Thank goodness I know the color of the bags and what the med looks like 'cause I didn't have time to put my glasses on before my flight down the stairs. "Go to your corners, kids or your not getting your breakfast!"

By now, my head is pounding, but it's quiet again...for 5 minutes. They don't seem to be taking in my diatribe on the healthy way to eat a meal is s l o w l y. Then they run around to see if anyone has left anything in their bowl. Now, remember who has to go out right away and who runs upstairs when you ask them if they want to go out.

Normally, this whole routine goes without a hitch, complaint or bark. It just seems as if the true coming of fall has given them all a boost of extra energy, but hasn't quite done the same for me.
Maybe I'll start eating what they're eating. I've thought about grounding them...but with dogs as with human kids...you're the one that usually takes the brunt of the grounding.

There's always tomorrow...

Great New Pet Hair Remover!!!

I'm always looking for new products for my critters and for myself to use. I saw an ad for this product, the Scotch Fur Fighter and thought...hhmmm...not very expensive, this one might work. So I ordered 2, 1 for the house and one for the car. When they arrived I couldn't stop myself from "putting it to the test." I used it on one sofa cushion. Wow, that was cool so I had to try another cushion. I wound up cleaning the entire sofa in just a couple of minutes! Yay!

The sticky sheet (looks like very fine hook and eye material...you know, the stuff that is on most kids shoes, your shoes, dog coats, etc). One pad cleans up quite a bit and there doesn't seem to be any way to get the hair, thread, whatever else might be lurking on your furniture, off wants the sheet gets ahold of it. The sheets are disposable, but seem as if they'll hold a lot before you have to change them.

I'm going to test them on clothing that tends to get pet hair on it ;-) ...and in my car. The 3M company sells 2 kinds. One is for pet hair removal, the other for the car. Don't know how they differ. I just know this is a whole lot easier than using tape, hair/lint removal rollers and even the vaccum cleaner.

I'm giving this new product a solid 4 paws.

Link to the 3M site by clicking on the title of this post. You can get one of these for free!!! You do have to pay the $2.50 shipping cost.

Great Get-Away Places...Pets Welcome!!!

MacPherson Vacation Properties

Great places to stay for the whole family...including your pet! Wouldn't you like to create a card using your pet's picture? Or, choose a card from the online card shop, mail it out to 1 or 100 hundred family members, friends, business associates...even to your friends' pets, in a couple of minutes, wherever you have a computer and internet access? Yes, you can do it at Starbucks! A card will cost you $2.00 or less. Time and money saved...priceless!

Click on my blog title above! Yes...prison. Chulo, aka Chewy aka Chu Chu, is a 17 mo old Xoloitzquintli (show-low-eets-queent-lee) boy. Xolos (show-lows) come in 3 sizes...standard, intermediate and mini (or toy). Chewy is a standard, weighing 38 lbs and 21 in. in height. 5 months ago he was turned into a rescue group who contacted the Xolo Rescue USA and in a matter of hours, with the dedication it takes a village to move a rescue dog quickly, Chulo was on his way to Oregon, then on a plane to the Montana Women's Prison "Prison Paws for Humanity" program.

Chewy had been living with another dog in the cab of a pick-up truck. He had NO training and questionable access to food as he was skin and bones. He was described as good at catching rats and mice.

He was about to get his second chance at the life he deserved by becoming an inmate's 24/7 responsibility. While at the prison, he learned that going potty happened outside not wherever he happened to be. He also passed his Beginning and Advanced levels of Obedience training. Think how far this boy came over 5 months, from living in a truck cab to leading a happy, healthy life and being welcomed anywhere. It's nothing short of a miracle.

I can't say thank you enough to his trainer in prison, even though I'll never know her name or get to meet her. She wrote me a 2 page letter about her experience with Chewy and his likes, dislikes and little quirks. She also told me she loved having Chewy with her and he'd be missed by her and the other inmates in the program. He was a favorite in the group.

Chulo arrived by plane and when I went to get him there was a small crowd of Alaska Airlines employees around his crate. Everyone wanted to know what kind of dog this beautiful animal is, personality, history of the breed, fascinated by his prison experience. It took me an hour to leave the cargo terminal and get on the road to home. Remember, I had never met Chewy. I spoke to him, opened his kennel door and he calm and gently went to each person for a sniff and a pet.

It's been 10 days now and Chewy has fit beautifully into our family, which includes 4 other dogs, 1 horse, 2 cats and 5 chickens. It's almost as if he's the "balance" in the group. We're working on his obedience training...making sure he doesn't lose all that he gained. Hopefully, we'll soon be going to Obedience competitions...just for fun. Rally-O? He loves to run free in the backyard and the pastures, loves attention, and like any other Xolo, raise your voice even a little and he admits to doing whatever it is he thinks you think he's done. And, true to the Xolo breed, he's way to smart for his own good, and for ours.

Take a few minutes to read about "Prison Paws for Humanity" (click on blog title above). They deserve recognition for the wonderful things they do. And a world of thanks to Warden Jo Acton and to dog trainer Deb Beoukamp for designing and creating this program.

Calling All Horse People or Wanna Be Horse People

Click on the title and follow the link to Joyce Leake's Animal University newsletter and invitation to join 8 outstanding people who followed their passion to work with the animals.

The upcoming symposium focuses on how horses affect our hearts and souls...but plenty of room for answering your questions about any animal. Since I couldn't have my dogs with me, I had no hesitation in stopping passing dogs and their humans to ask if I could "get my dog fix?" What a great group of dogs I encountered! And, such a wide variety!

While walking on the boardwalk, I came upon a man and his adorable Black Lab. At first, it looked like they were just playing with a stick. When I got closer, I realized the dog was doing all kinds of moves, with the stick being his reward! The longer I watched the more I thought "they are practicing 'Freestyle' moves!!!" The crowd was growing and I didn't get a chance to ask, but it sure was fun seeing that team working on a great dance routine :-)

If you're not familiar with "Freestyle" aka Dancing With Dogs, search it out on Google. I learned this from experience ;-( It is common to take your new puppy or dog outside to "do her business" while she's learning. After that routine is well established, many of us are just as happy to let our dogs out the door and into the yard to "go" on their own. OK, not really a problem...BUT...if not using a collar and leash to take your dog out becomes the norm, think about when you're on a trip, or going to the vet, or taking your dog anywhere where they will be leashed.

If your like me, when I'm traveling with my dogs and stop for a break, I want them out of the car, doing their "business" when given a command (ours is "Hurry Up!") and then back into the car. If they are not in the habit of pottying while on leash, they will hold it...at least as long as they can. Your finally arrive at Aunt Susie's 500 miles away and the first thing your dog may do is christen Aunt Susie's new carpeting! Believe me, Aunt Susie won't give a rip if you tell her this is the first time this has happened since little Peanut was a puppy.

Basic lesson here? It's fine to let your dog(s) go out into your fenced yard to go potty. Just make sure you also take them on a walk, or at least go out in the yard with them while you have them on a leash. You probably needed some fresh air anyway and your dog will love that you've gone out with them ;-)

Philadelphia Eagles Hire Michael VicK

According to the source below, Michael has been hired to a 2-year contract by the Philadelphia Eagles. First my 2 godpuppies arrived on Thursday evening. Two of the sweetest pups I've ever had the pleasure of knowing :-) Uncle Chase is a senior citizen, handsome Pembroke Welsh Corgi with more energy than I had in my 20's! Miss Millie (seen with me in the picture on the left column here) is a beautiful blue merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The difference? Miss Millie has a tail! She's just a young whipper snapper at just over a year old. They get so excited when they come to Camp Connie~~~I get hugs and kisses and much conversation as they make themselves comfortable wherever they please. During their visit, I learned the true meaning of a 3 Dog Night. As I attempted to climb into bed and get comfortable, my PON, Lacey would position herself parallel to my left side...up close and personal. Chase would do the mirror image on my right side. Miss Millie, not phased by their boldness, just positioned herself on top of me, rear legs out in froggy style, big eyes looking into mine...until she closed them and settled in for the night. Thank goodness for air conditioning. It was 100F outside!

Friday morning, our sweet little Sadie Rose arrived for the week-end while the rest of her family went camping. Being just shy of 2 years old, taking her camping didn't seem to be in any one's best interest. BTW, Sadie is my human grandchild and she slept in her own crib!!! She LOVES uff uff's and was delighted that Millie and Chase were closer to the ground than my 4 - 4 legged children. What a life saver she was for me...she didn't get tired of throwing a ball and the dogs didn't get tired of chasing it. Definitely a win-win situation all around. Mothers --- LET your children grow up to be dog lovers!

It's still too early to really get the cat's take on all this fun and frolic. He did seem to find wonderful hiding places, but also took time to spar with the dogs and politely succumb to Sadie's ever readiness to give him hugs, kisses and pats...followed by attempting to get away with grabbing a handful of hair as a souvenir.

Sadie left on Sunday afternoon. It was not easy to let her go...she's such a happy little girl with a wicked sense of humor. Monday evening Miss Millie and Uncle Chase greeted their family with much joy and fervor. It was just as hard seeing them go, although they live a lot closer than Sadie. And, it was good to hear that my dear friend and her family had a wonderful 4-day get away.

The house automatically reverted to it's rather calm, quiet atmosphere. Only 4 dogs, 2 cats, 5 chickens and one horse left behind. Thank goodness it wasn't ALL quiet on the Pacific Northwestern front...

Love My Groomers!

Lacey and Jake spent the afternoon with their groomers. We took advantage of it by going to the Beachfire Grill on Holmes Harbor. Sat on the deck that looks over the harbor, part of Whidbey, the mountains, and clear blue skies. The dogs were quite disappointed that they weren't invited. It was too hot for them to spend time in the car.

We are having a true summer in the Pacific Northwest. Such a treat. Our friends "down under" are enjoying winter.

No matter what the season is where you live, your pets need fresh, cool water! Make it available in several places, inside and out, and be sure to wash out the bowls at least once a day. Today was Annie's (our 8 yo Intermediate rescue Xolo) fifth 5 min training session with a skateboard. She loves to train with the clicker and she's so very smart and willing. Took her out and she did 2 runs through our mini-agility course, then I took the skateboard out. Much to my surprise, the first thing she did was put 2 feet on the board and push it with the other two!!! This is her first time actually "riding" the board! I'm so proud of her!!! Of course, to make sure she was understanding the concept, she repeated her performance 5 times...and ended with a click and a giant bonus. I walked over to pick up the board and she was still trying to get on it...silly girl. After that she had a free run and a couple of long distance recalls. Then she was released to get a well deserved drink and some lounging on the deck.
Today was Ochipa's 3rd-5 min training session with the skateboard, and she readily put first 2, then all 4 feet on the board...way to go, Ochipa! A few more tries and she put her front 2 feet on the board and pushed with her back feet! Again, lots of praise from me (yes, dancing around and talking in a very high voice), after her click and bonus treat.

I learned something today. Ochipa just gets too excited at the prospect of working to hear the clicker and get the treat. So, while practicing some obedience moves and some RallyO steps, I stopped using the clicker, spoke lower and slower, and just gave her a "Yes!" as she figured out just what I wanted. She's such a clown and athlete and loves to hear the word "work." Just seeing the clicker has her doing every move she knows...and a few she makes up. The clicker is perfect for learning tricks, as far as she's concerned. But, we'll be just keeping it a little calmer for obedience work. It's bad enough she's small and I can easily step on her! Getting the RallyO course solid is going to take being calm and quiet. But she loves RallyO, so I don't mind which method she chooses to learn it :-)

Lacey, our 8 yo Polish Lowland Sheepdog had her first try at the skateboard today. She's a retired multi-CH and has been well obedience and show trained. She's learned lots of tricks using the clicker and treats, but she was so intent on showing me how well she sat, laid down, and kept her eyes on me, she disregarded the board altogether. After 15 minutes, she was comfortable putting 2 feet on the board, and wasn't concerned that it moved at all. That gleam in the eye when a dog "gets it" with clicker training is amazing. Lacey didn't have that look, so we ended on a couple of things she does well...sit, down, rollover, high 5, wait at the door...and that put a smile on her face. Maybe she's just working too hard on getting all the steps necessary for the "roll yourself up in a blanket" trick we're working on that she just didn't want to focus on anymore. Thank you Morten Egtvedt & Cecilie Koeste for adding that trick to the repertoire!!! Check out their website at http://www.canisclickertraining.com/

To dogs, all activity is play. So take a playful (not stressed and "do I HAVE to do this") attitude and both your pets and you will just enjoy life together. A tired dog is a dog that is less likely to make up her own games...like destuff the sofa, eat only the new left shoe, rearrange the plants in the garden.
Keep the training positive! No animal needs negative training or punishment. I'll be talking about "Kitchen Training" in a future post. It's all about keeping it short and fun!

If you're in the greater Seattle area, take a look at Ahimsa's Dog Training site on my links. I'll be writing a review on the school soon. Meanwhile, check out their varied and creative classes, and go into the shop. Great toys for the dog, or cat, who needs to work their brain and/or the dog who spends a lot of time at home alone. http://www.ahimsadogtraining.com/

PS: Annie, Ochipa and Lacey are on my slide show! Annie is the copper brown w/blond hair on her head, Ochipa the tiny black girl, and Lacey the hairy white one.

Crate Train Your Cat

This would make a great party trick...having your cat go into a crate with just a word from you! I walked in the door and respectfully asked if it was okay if she came in if I held her. Well, Gwen and Debbie said "Of course! But what happens if you put her down?" "She runs around," said I. "Well, put her down and let her get acquainted. We have other doggy smells around here for her!" Gwen pulled out a bag of dog treats, and often reserved Ochipa ran over to her and became her newest best friend. Ochipa seemed to think the library was a cool place. She did tend to like the dog book section the best.

Gwen said "My goodness, she's a hairless!" Yes, she is. "Is she the same breed of dog that Frida Kahlo, the artist, was always surrounded by?" "Yes!" I exclaimed. Of course the librarian would be familiar with Frida Kahlo and Xolos (show-lows)!

Thanks, Gwen and Debbie! I love taking my dogs places with me. Living on an island on Puget Sound has many perks. It's dog friendly, the scenery is breathtaking, the people are friendly, and there's only a 2 lane highway from one end of the island to the other...no city traffic!!! There's a long dog beach and at least 2 designated, off-leash dog parks. And where's there's an outdoor sitting area at a restaurant, it is most common to have a dog or two smiling at you :-)
My most favorite place to hang out is Island Tea Company (http://www.islandteacompany.com/). A lovely little place for tea and charming gifts. While the shop owner is a wonderful friend, the tea shop dog, Miss Millie (a blue merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi) is quite a draw, also. :-)))

Yes...paradise!!!

http://www.fridakahlo.com/

Thank Yous & Updates Mean A Lot

If you've even been a breeder of dogs, cats, horses...you always wonder how the little ones are doing, years after they've been in their forever homes. If you're lucky, like we have been, many of the families stay in touch, send pictures and updates on their little ones...through their senior years...and when they've crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

The notes and pictures and phone calls we've received over the years, the hopes of getting another pup from you in the future, and the contacts you get years later hoping for another pup just like the first one a family got from you mean so much.

Tonight, I just want to thank Kristy for getting in touch with news of Holly, now 8 1/2 yrs old, and hoping for another one of our pups. Sadly, for us, we stopped breeding our Leonbergers a few years ago, so continuing to get updates is even more special. We now fill our lives with rescues, as well as our dogs that are getting up in years.

If you've gotten a family pet from a breeder, have you been in contact with your breeder? How about the shelter or humane society that put extra love, care and attention into your adopted family pet? They love to get news and pictures, too! Stay in touch!!!

Ready To Launch!

After many months of dreaming, wishing, hoping and trying to learn how to turn my love of animals into something more than just being surrounded by them, I am excited to say my blog is launched and ready for all to see and comment on!!!

Look for posts about dog training and tricks, how to clicker train your cat, animal related book reviews, product reviews, and where to go to find some of the best products, and people, to care for, and spoil the pets in your life. When I'd complete or almost complete one, I'd change majors just so I could continue to go to school. I started and finished this particular quest after I was married and was raising two children. My father's comment was, "better now than when I would have had to pay for it." I had taken college classes since I was 16. These 10 years were continuous. The term "lifelong student" appealed to me. In the end, I wound up with 3 degrees; 2 in English and one in Nursing. After establishing my career, I went after post-grad studies in Bio-Medical Law and Ethics. There didn't seem to be any support groups for this particular addiction.

I've found that this is not something you fix or cure. Being a life long learner is a good thing. Oh, the stories and adventures and sleepless nights cramming I could tell.

Somewhere along the line, I think I was studying the life and evolution of dogs, disguised as becoming a dog trainer. While doing this is something I still love to do today, I seemed to by-pass the parallel learning option of computer technology. At first, while my 7 yo daughter was working her way around a keyboard, I was staunchly standing up for my right to "just say no!" (During this period, I was continually having trouble finding the "on" button...just too frustrating to an English Lit major). Do I have regrets? Well, yes and no. Yes, because I'm blown away by what one can do with a physical object, sometimes smaller than a mouse (pun intended). No, because the patience and number of active brain cells it takes to make the silly thing "sing" doesn't fit into my "fast food" approach to life.

Today, however, I was bemoaning my plight to my dear and talented friend that I had no idea how to create a blog, other than what was laid out in front of me. Her's, you see, is beautiful and makes you want to sit in front of it with a cup of tea, a plate of scones, and virtually move into her space. http://www.dorihallberg.typepad.com/

Always one to be generous with her time and talent, she invited me to join her at her tea shoppe for my first lesson on blogging. Do you have ANY idea how many magical things you can create??? I felt like the proverbial tourist in NYC ... "Wow! Look at those tall buildings!" "Oh! how do you make this look like that???

So, I am blogging tonight to publicly say, "thanks, Dori! You Rock!!!" And to say to all, being a Life Long Learner is the only way to go.

Sweet dreams...

Too Late

It's too late, or too early to make any sense.
